Chers amis,
Dear friends,

As newly elected president of our society, I have set myself a number of objectives. With your help I hope to meet them within the next three years.

Among these objectives I would like to stress first and foremost the necessity to attract new members to the society from the Maritimes. Thanks to Frans De Bruyn, Marie Laure Girou Swiderski, Peter Sabor and Eleanor Ty—to name but a few Executive members past and present—we managed over the last few years to attract and maintain a good membership from all regions of the country, with the exception of the Maritimes. This is a concern to me and the current Executive, and it should be dealt with rapidly. Our next three conferences will be held in Saskatoon (2001), Québec (2002), and Vancouver (2003). Why not meet in the Maritimes in 2004?

A third objective is to attract new members to the Executive. In advance of the Saskatoon conference, Frans and I will mail a list of positions to fill in October 2001. By giving greater visibility to the elections, we hope to have new people volunteer to join.

Paul Rice (Memorial U.) was the Art, Music, and Theatre representative for a number of years; he has agreed to replace Ursula Rempel (U. of Manitoba), who has served for the last three years. Peter Sabor (U. Laval) and April London (U. of Ottawa) will keep on representing the Society, Peter to the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, and April to the Fédération canadienne des études humaines. Thanks to all.

Some people have joined the Executive, and some have left. John Baird, after a hectic year as Conference president, may now relax—a little. Together with his organizing committee, he set up a very stimulating conference in Toronto. The weather was great, attendance at a record high—due in part to the presence of our friends from the Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society—, papers well attended and discussed. We now look forward to the Lumen volume. Kudos to John!

This is a very high standard by which to be judged, but I will try my best to follow in Marie Laure’s footsteps. Merci, Marie Laure !
